Small businesses may turn out to be where enterprise AI becomes real first.
Not because they have bigger budgets, better infrastructure or dedicated AI teams, but because they sit much closer to the work itself. They know what a missed lead costs, what an extra pair of hands is worth, and exactly where time disappears. As AI shifts from software that helps people work to software that does the work, that proximity changes the equation.
The question is no longer whether SMEs will adopt AI. It’s whether AI gives them access to capabilities that once required a much larger organisation, and whether that changes what it means to be small in the first place.
